Carol talks about how podcasts are the lazy author’s best friend and the joys of being part of a dying institution. (Plus an unsolicited post-election exhortation from Ben.)
If you make your country the guarantor of your ethical convictions, you will be disappointed.
Every empire, by its nature, is ethically compromised.
Statements like “America is great because American is good” or “Love Trumps Hate” will never be consistently proven by the people of the most powerful nation in the world.
As my African American friends have reminded me, the existential alienation many of us feel today has been their *entire* experience of this country.
Don’t expect your country to validate your deepest convictions. Be your own ethical guarantor instead.
The only compelling proof of your most-cherished beliefs is the fruit that comes from your own life.
I so enjoyed my conversation with Carol; which took an unexpectedly hopeful turn as we talked about the future of progressive Christianity. Enjoy!
